Sarah Kaspari Baker, a 47-year-old family NP from Bismarck, N.D., provides primary care at the Northland Community Health Clinic in McClusky, N.D., as well as trauma care in the emergency department of St. Alexius hospital in Bismarck. She was invited on a medical mission by the founders of a clinic on Gonave Island (La Gonave) in Haiti, in the town of Anse-à-Galets. The earthquake struck while she was working at the clinic, and she was able to help victims of the quake before returning home on January 18, 2010. "Nobody in Haiti turns somebody else away if they can help," she says.
Hear her tell her story below.

I loved your story! I am heading to Haiti next week for 3 weeks with Medical Missionaries from VA. It will be my first trip and I am scared, unsure and excited all at the same time. Thank you for sharing your story! I hope to document my experiences while gone and present them back in Paducah and Nashville when I return!

Thank you so much for sharing and seeing your pictures. I was blessed to be able to do two medical missionary visits to La Gonave through the Weslyns in the early 80's. It was so wonderful to hear from there because I have been so wondering how the island survived. I heard about other areas of Haite but not La Gonave and it was an answer to prayers to hear from there. The pictures of the hospital brought back fond memories and I am so happpy to see that there are better beds there!!! Thanks again. You are so right on how this experience can change your life and you don't look at other things the same. May God bless you and all those in Haiti.
