The Ars Medica Collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art features an assortment of vintage medical posters, a longtime favorite form of advertising.
The poster designers use bright colors, bold lettering, and captivating illustrations to sell products, promote cures or to warn against social diseases. Many of the products have disappeared, but their poster's use of typography and imagery for the purpose of selling is ageless.
The museum's medical posters are from the personal collection of William H. Helfand, a longstanding member of the museum's Prints, Drawings, and Photographs Committee who began his collection while living in Paris and working as the pharmaceutical company Merck's French subsidiary president.
ADVANCE presents 20 of the posters with audio commentary by John Ittman, the museum's curator of prints followed by remarks from Helfand.
The entire collection is available for viewing at the Philadelphia Museum of Art by requesting an appointment via e-mail at the following address: pdpinfo@philamuseum.org.
