Maine: LaNoce Heads Back to Practice

Virginia LaNoce, the NP practice owner whose politically charged practice struggles were detailed in ADVANCE in late 2009, is on her way back to full practice privileges. The owner of NP Family Medicine in New Portland, Maine, voluntarily surrendered her NP license last June, after questions arose about her treatment of chronic pain patients (read our coverage here).
LaNoce met with the Board of Nursing in December 2009, and she told ADVANCE that members were "impressed with how much I had done since we last met." She said the BON would reinstate her license provided that she is supervised for at least 1 year. At press time, LaNoce was seeking an NP to work with her on site.
LaNoce said the BON was much more supportive of her during the December meeting than previously. "They really just want to make sure that I am practicing in a reasonable and safe manner. It will be a long process to get back to where I was in my independent status, but I am going for it!"
The nurse practitioner said many of her patients have called expressing frustration with what they feel is dismissive care from other providers. She is anxious to get back to treating patients and said she will create a plan for each patient before prescribing controlled substances.
